I have been almost entirely missing from fandoms for a long time, partly due to some bad med interactions last year and a tendency to read rather than write but to celebrate 10 years since I wrote Aggravation (Avon/Tarrant) I have started part 7 of the series.
I don't understand subjective time. AO3 assures me that the first part of my Sherlock/Prisoner fic was posted over three years ago and not, as I was certain, maybe 6 months or so.
It’s years since I last plugged Invictus here, so this is your triennial reminder that I wrote a really odd novel once and it’s still available to download.

Robin Hood gave up being a hero when he left Sherwood Forest, thirteen years ago. The old stories are already distorted and half forgotten. King John has made certain of that. Struggling to keep his family and the remains of his pride in a world increasingly indifferent to his name, the one thing Robin doesn’t anticipate is a dangerous ghost from his past.

The reappearance of his old enemy Guy de Gisborne represents not just mortal danger but the chance of heroism again, but at what cost? When their renewed hostilities stir up the King’s suspicions, Robin finds himself on the run across Europe in the unwelcome company of the one man he does not understand and can never trust.

Will Robin redeem the tarnished title of King of Sherwood, or will Gisborne’s slowly unravelling obsession lose him home, family and his reputation forever?

It’s about as dark as anything I’ve written here but rather more complex. Judging from Goodreads some people really liked it, and it made at least one person very angry indeed which is probably fair enough overall.

You can get it free from Lulu

For 99p on Kindle

Also the first few chapters as free download on Kindle here

And on at least one pirate website, I believe, but I’ve been unwilling to give them my credit card details in order to investigate further!

comments

Didn't go where I expected, but I enjoyed writing it. (Physics. I always have a soft spot for writing physics and bad behaviour and it's got both in spades.)

How it ended up being 33k I don't know. I have also been reading about subjunctives and 18C grammarians. Unlike the rest of the world I use a lot of subjunctives without thinking about it, though I have no idea where I got the habit from. (Apparently Jane Austen added several when P&P was republished, so presumably she didn't use them first time round but felt that she ought to.)

Also today I have been listening to Rush and mourning a little. Many of the most perfectly joyful moments of my life have been at Rush gigs.
The Guardian yesterday had a brief and accidentally hilarious article about the highly respected literary writer Francis Spufford who has written an ‘unauthorised’ Narnia novel and is most upset that C S Lewis’s estate isn't begging him to publish it.

The total lack of context was quite startling. As far as everyone concerned with the article seemed to be aware, he must be the first person ever to write such a thing and of course it ought to make him lots of money because his (also white male middle-aged) friends thought it was really really good. So much so that they were happy to award it somewhat premature canon status as "a sensitive and brilliant addition to the Narnia corpus". There was bafflement about why the Lewis estate was utterly uninterested but not the slightest recognition that they no doubt get sent unauthorised Narnia novels at least twice a week and they aren't talent spotting literary agents.

I'm sure many of us have been tempted to print out 75 hard copies of our favourite pride and joy fanfic and hand them out to our family and friends, but most of us have just about enough self awareness not to tell the Guardian about it. Anyway many of the comments are fun.

comments

I have finished Standing Orders, the last part of the One Small Change series which had weighed in at a eye-watering 87,790 words and is now very definitely done.

In case anyone is curious, the one small change is that it is Blake who returns to Liberator after Star One and Avon who is missing. The series runs from just after Star One through the Revolution and ends around a decade and a half afterwards. It's mostly Blake/Tarrant with a remarkable amount of highly amoral Avon and a lot of derring-do, politics and misunderstandings. I have had great fun with it but all things must end.

comments

Any resemblance to current US or UK politics, living or dead, is entirely coincidental, by the way.

comments

But since he's married to Roj Blake, currently serving his fourth term as President on a wafer thin majority and with all his political enemies circling like wolves at the scent of weakness, it seems to others that Tarrant has to be doing just that.

Fortunately Blake is quite capable of managing anything that politicians can throw at him without spousal assistance. It's an old problem, not one of their many new ones, that is coming back to haunt then both.

Standing Orders Ch 1 on AO3

Notes: Sequel to Happiest Day, in the One Small Change series.

comments
